How to get rid of excessive pop-ups, ads, and unwanted redirects

After you've done what Kappy suggested, install this and wait for a while for it to take effect. I've been using the free version for a long time and I never get any unwanted ads, and very few email scams.

And never download anything that isn't legal, e.g. from warez websites or IRC chat rooms.

You may have inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware.

Adblock and similar remedies won't help. Although adware works through deception, nothing can prevent you from willfully installing it. Stop installing things until you positively identify the problem.

Sounds like a browser issue.

You didn't say which browser you use.

AdBlock works great for me on Safari and Firefox. Don't blame the browser if you don't use AdBlock, browsers are not secure.

Last resort, reinstall OS (restart Cmd+R), it may eliminate or help determine what is causing the problem.

You seem to have responded to everything that won’t fix your computer. See Kappy’s post and remove the adware you installed.

You may have installed the "VidX" trojan, perhaps under a different name. To remove it, first open the Applications folder by selecting

Go ▹ Applications

from the Finder menu bar, or by pressing the key combination shift-command-A. Look for an item named "VidX," "MacVx," "MacSmart," or similar. If present, drag it to the Trash and empty. If in doubt, delete any application you don't recognize.

From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions

Uninstall any extension you don't know you need. If in doubt, remove all of them. You may well have more than one that's adware or spyware.
